SSUNS 2011 is still looking for Deputy Undersecretaries-General! Applications are available for the positions of Deputy Undersecretary-General, Committee Affairs (General Assemblies and Economic and Social Councils); Deputy Undersecretary-General, Committee Affairs (Specialized Agencies and Crises); and Deputy Director of Public Relations. 5.1 Conference on Africa, call for staff
The African Students Association is hosting a conference on March 11 and 12 discussing the issues facing Africa today. There will be guest speakers and dynamic workshops followed by a crisis simulation at the end. We are looking for experienced and creative crisis directors/chairs willing to work with ASSA to plan and implement a crisis situation. If you are interested, please email Emily at external@irsam.ca with your experience and a few ideas you have about the crisis.
6.1 Panties for Peace Campaign
The McGill Delegation of Rights and Democracy is hosting another round of the “Panties for Peace” campaign on Thursday February 10. We have a table booked outside the SSMU lounge where we encourage all students to come and drop off a clean pair of women’s panties and get a free pantie-shaped cookie in return! Are you a man that for some reason doesn’t own an extra pair of women’s panties? No problem! We will have extra panties that you can write a message onto to show your solidarity with the women of Burma. The panties will then be shipped over to the Burmese embassy in protest against the military junta’s regime.
The Panties for Peace campaign plays on the regime leaders’ superstitious fear that contact with a woman’s underpants will rob them of their power. Women around the world are asked to post their panties to local Burmese embassies in a bid to strip the regime of its power and bring an end to its gross violations of human rights, especially those committed against Burma’s women.
Aung San Suu Kyi, the winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, was released from house arrest on November 13th, 2010. However, human rights groups say more than 2,200 political prisoners remain behind bars in the country!
